Women seeking abortions in South Dakota may have to face already tough laws made even tougher. No dedicated clinics have operated there since 1994, and Planned Parenthood is only granted to fly in a single representative when absolutely necessary. If House Bill 1171 passes, there will be a disturbing new wrinkle. “Justifiable homicide” would be expanded in scope to condone the killing of those who would harm a fetus, such as abortion doctors. Abortion doctors in South Dakota dealing with justifiable death


House Bill 1171, which made it out of committee by a 9 to 3 party-line vote, is sponsored by South Dakota state Rep. Phil Jensen, a long-time opponent of abortion rights. He claims that “consistency” could possibly be brought to South Dakota’s criminal code with the bill that would allow prosecutors to charge for murder crimes when unborn fetus is killed.


However, such crimes involve the murder of pregnant women, too, which is rather different than what House Bill 1171 proposes. By changing the meaning of justifiable murder, making it acceptable to slay so long as the act of eliminating is performed in order to protect a fetus, Jensen is suggesting that even if the woman wanted an abortion, any person who aided her in obtaining abortion services could end up in the cross hairs.


Apparently, ‘This isn’t an abstract bill’


Mother Jones got National Abortion Federation’s Vicki Saporta’s opinion on the matter. She said that Rep. Jensen’s House Bill 1171 is “an invitation to murder abortion providers.”. It gives extremists the necessary fetal-defense statute to escape punishment for murder. As Kristin Aschenbrenner of the South Dakota Advocacy Network for Women puts it, the bill has every little thing to do with granting a fetus personhood.

“It takes my breath away,” Rosenbaum said via e-mail. “Constitutionally, a state cannot make it a crime to perform a constitutionally lawful act.”

The recovery and rehabilitation of Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords is progressing at a lightning pace. It has been confirmed that Gabrielle Giffords talks again. Giffords is in the middle of a long period of physical rehabilitation after sustaining a traumatic head injury. She reportedly has been speaking, and asked medical personnel for toast with her breakfast. The wounds she received are normally deadly.


Arizona Congresswoman getting far better in progress


The hospital in Tucson, AZ, where AZ Congresswoman Giffords was staying, has moved her to a physical rehabilitation facility located in Houston, TX. She will recover from her brain injury there. Giffords got a brain injury in the Tucson shooting that Jared Lee Loughner carried out. Now, she is recuperating quickly. CBS reports that she was rushed into a Tucson hospital on January 8 after getting shot in the head and can now speak again. Her physical rehabilitation regimen at TIRR Memorial Herman Hospital is extreme. Since the hospital specializes in physical rehabilitation for brain and head trauma, Giffords was moved there.


Speech for Giffords with an urge for food


A spokesman explained the talk therapy that Giffords is going through it going well. As Giffords is hooked up to a breathing tube, either it would have to be removed or a vent would have to be put in it so she could talk. This is why it’s unknown currently how she is doing this speech. Her urge for food has also returned. This is a milestone. Her Facebook page recently had a comment from her husband, Mark Kelly. He said, “Gabby’s appetite is back — even though it’s hospital food.” As soon as April Kelly can be returning to go on the Space Shuttle Endeavour.

According to Reuters, Congress just passed a bill in remembrance of one of the Tucson shooting victims. The shooting killed six and injured 13 people. A new courthouse is being constructed in Yuma, Ariz., which will be titled for Chief Judge John M. Roll. The building can be complete in a couple of years. It will open in 2013.

Youth obesity has tripled over the last 30 years, claim numerous studies. Now a new study out of American University suggests that there might be a common link between higher instances of childhood weight problems and working mothers who are often away from home. Families with moms who worked more hours had children with a higher body mass index (BMI) over their lifetimes, the study found. The obesity relationship


There were 990 children in grades 3, 5, and 6 looked at in the youth obesity research from 10 cities in the U.S. The study was published in the journal Child Development in January/February. Prof. Taryn Morrissey from American University’s Public Administration and Policy department was the founder of the research. It was found that a child’s Body Mass Index was influenced in a small but cumulative amount by the number of years a working mother worked. It isn’t good for a child to have a higher Body Mass Index. Chances of weight problems go up with the BMI.


Surprisingly, such factors as the children’s physical activity levels and Television time did not explain the link between maternal employment and children’s Body Mass Index, the research indicates. Researchers were confused when even the time of day a mother worked didn’t make a difference in the BMI level.


Food cooking unusual


With working getting in the way, working parents cannot shop and prepare food. That is probably the cause. There are more calories typically in pre-prepared foods and when eating out. That means that these kids were getting more of these meals.


Helping change


Behavior problems and obesity related illnesses like high cholesterol, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes, along with lesser life expectancy which the Children’s Hospital in Boston concluded could be as much as five years, are all what youth obesity can trigger which is the reason why Prof. Morrissey thinks something needs to be done. It is important to make healthy, affordable food available. Society will become healthier this way.

Australia was nearly paralyzed as Cyclone Yasi smashed to the northeast coast of Queensland not too long ago. Queensland, the northeast quarter of Australia, had already been inundated by record floods and had to endure the impact of Yasi, a Category 5 storm. Damage is catastrophic. No running away for Mubarak


Leader Mubarak has stated he won’t leave since the beginning of the unrest. It has been about 30 years of Mubarak being in office. There has not ever been a full democratic election to confirm this either. MSNBC reports that in an interview with him he did say that he was tired of it all. He said though that “there can be chaos” and “the Muslim Brotherhood will take over” if he were to leave. A transitional government may occur soon with the talks that he has been having with leaders of opposition groups.

Brigham Young University’s Jimmer Fredette has the kind of jump shot that brings a rain of basketball hysteria. On Jan. 26, Fredette and the ninth-ranked BYU Cougars stunned the fourth-ranked SDSU Aztecs 71-58 with so many long-range jumpers, Twitter had a meltdown. All the hype fit to tweet about the senior guard was enough to crash Twitter’s servers for a while.

In the week of Jan 16-22 United States gasoline costs surpassed their highest level since the fall of 2008. A record global demand for oil this year has been driving the spike in gasoline prices, along with restrictions in supply. Economists foresee a dramatic rise in gasoline costs, perhaps as high as $4 a gallon in 2011. People will be taking out pay day loans just to fill up their gasoline tanks.


Regular gasoline costs increasing


About $3.12 a gallon was the national regular for gasoline pricesgas prices. The AAA reported this to be the number on Jan 21. This average hasn’t been reached in quite a while. In fact, Oct 2008 was the last time it happened. The region that you are in will heavily determine your gasoline prices too. This is due to state gasoline tax laws. In Salt Lake City, it was much lower. $2.74 was the price. You may even need a financial institution loan if you’re going to fill up with $3.58. That’s the Honolulu price. Oil prices did go down on January 21 although gas costs did rise 9 percent in the U.S. just since December 1. $89.11 was the crude for March delivery. This was the New York Mercantile Exchange price. The demand for oil might be going up in China though with its plan to cool the economy which is something oil speculators are nervous about.


Making recovery more difficult with higher gasoline prices


In the world, it is expected by oil experts that less oil is getting used than is being produced. In fact, there is about 5 million barrels more a day produced. The high gas rates are because of the oil speculators. They’re the ones to blame. They are hoping the United States economic climate is on the verge of taking off. But higher gas prices might work against a more robust recovery. Cameron Hanover is an energy consulting firm. This firm explained that another $4 million is spent buying gasoline in the United States each and every time there’s a 1 cent increase in gasoline prices. The regular gas price within the U.S. rose 12 cents in the last month, diverting another $48 million — not good news for those who had already made a budget for their cash until payday.

Sugarloaf ski area is facing an enormous evacuation. A gust of wind brought down the lift. The Sugarloaf ski lift brought 5 chairs down 40 feet and stranded one hundred others. At approximately 10:45 a.m. on Tues, a very strong gust of wind hit the Sugarloaf ski area. The cables derailed with the Spillway East Slope lift. The chairs were thrown 30 to 40 feet down to the snow. Several skiers were hurt during this. About 100 other skiers were trapped on the lift. At the Sugarloaf ski area, the wind got much worse this morning. It was up to 20 and 30 miles per hour.
